Nel loro insieme, gli stagni e le zone umide minori sono una risorsa d’acqua dolce eccezionale: i milioni di piccoli corpi d’acqua con una superficie inferiore a dieci ettari rappresentano, in tutto il mondo, il 30% della superficie globale delle acque ferme. In Europa, tali ecosistemi comprendono una gamma di ambienti acquatici altamente diversificati e diffusi, malgrado la forte riduzione nel loro numero (fino al 90%) e nella loro estensione, come è avvenuto in alcuni Paesi.

Part 2: Gyrinidae, Haliplidae, Paelobiidae, Sphaeriusidae. — An updated checklist of Gyrinidae, Haliplidae, Paelobiidae Hygrobiidae) and Sphaeriusidae Microsporidae) of Switzerland is given and briefly annotated. But for a few exceptions, the work is based on the identification of specimens by the author. Paelobiidae and Sphaeriusidae are each represented by a single species. After exclusion of misidentifications and highly unlikely or insufficiently documented data, 8 species of Gyrinidae and 16 species of Haliplidae are listed.
